AMA Motocross rd.4 - Budds Creek, MD

Budds Creek National - While Jeremy McGrath won 72 250cc supercross main events during his illustrious career, that number seems to pale when held up to the light and compared to, as of Sunday, June 17, 2007, Ricky Carmichael’s 100 career AMA Motocross victories. At Budds Creek, Maryland, Ricky Carmichael reached the century mark by winning round four of the 2007 AMA National Motocross Championship. And not only did RC collect his 100th Motocross victory, he also kept his win streak alive, having yet to lose a National in 2007. Yet top defeat Carmichael on the natural terrain circuits of the AMA Nationals this season, James Stewart got off to a good start at Budds Creek, the young Floridian narrowly beating Carmichael in the opening moto. This it all came down to the second moto, Stewart out front on his Kawasaki 450F, cased mercilessly by Carmichael’s bright yellow and red Makita Suzuki RMZ450F. Carmichael and his number four Suzuki chewed on the green rear fender of Stewart’s Kawasaki for the first 11 laps of the 30-minute-plus-two-lap drama, but on lap number 12, Carmichael zapped the 2007 AMA Supercross Champion by performing a nifty pass atop one of Budds Creek’s many hills. From there, RC set full sail, never looked back, won the moto, and yet again, the overall. Factoring in his supercross victories, Carmichael now shows 148 career victories in the AMA Motocross and Supercross Media Guide. Missing the first three rounds of the 2007 AMA National Motocross Championship due to self-induced vacation, Chad Reed flew to Budds Creek to race round four of the series — primarily to prepare for the Motocross of Nations that will run at the facility later this September — and rode to strong 3-4 moto scores for third overall. Team Honda’s Andrew Short was fourth on the day, Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry fifth and KTM’s Mile Alessi, sixth.

Reigning AMA Motocross Lites National Champion Ryan Villopoto of the Team Kawasaki/Pro Circuit team thoroughly dominated the 250F-based class at Budds Creek, winning both motos by, at least, 10+ seconds. Teammate Ben Townley — winner at last Sunday’s Southwick round — placed second overall, second in both motos. Team Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence had his best race of the 2007 Motocross Lites season, going 3-3 for third overall. Team Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey was fourth and Team SoBe/No Fear/Samsung/Honda’s Josh Grant was fifth. Yamaha factory rider Josh Hill was sixth, and SoBe/No Fear/Samsung/Honda rider Jake Weimer had a strong outing on the hills of Budds Creek to finish seventh overall.
