Carmichael calls time on career at Millville with 150 wins; Ryan Villopoto wins in Motocross Lites National - 11 years in coming, Ricky Carmichael’s 11-year career came to an end at the Spring Creek Motocross Park in Millville, Minnesota on Sunday, August 12, 2007. And what could only be the fitting end to his outlandishly successful career, Carmichael won, thus leaving his name in the AMA Pro Racing Motocross and Supercross record book with 150 career victories. Although only the ninth round of the 12-round AMA National Motocross Championship Series, Carmichael held true to ending his career in Millville, winning all six Nationals he chose to compete in during his part-time farewell season to American motocross.
“This is a sport that has made me and provided me a great life and lifestyle,” said Carmichael, also a 15-time AMA champion. “I’ve surrounded myself with great sponsors and people that look out for me. It’s funny to think that 1996 was my first national and its weird to think that this ride is over. Its time to move on and I’m happy with every decision I’ve made.”
Somewhat outshined by Carmichael’s curtain closing performance, Team Yamaha’s Grant Langston finished second overall at Millville with 2-2 moto finishes. Team KTM’s Mike Alessi used a steady 4-3 moto combination to round out the podium.
With Carmichael now out of the 2007 National Championship mix — and James Stewart sitting out Sunday’s race, still feeling the effects of previously incurred injuries — the fight for the 2007 AMA Motocross Number One Plate has boiled down to a two man boxing match between Team Honda man Andrew Short and Team Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry. Both have 311 points. Langston lurks in the background, his late season charge bringing him to within only 11 points of ferry and Short.
The wild, club swinging fight between Team Kawasaki/Pro Circuit riders Ben Townley and Ryan Villopoto for the 2007 AMA Motocross Lites Championship went yet another round in Minnesota, the duo, yet again trading moto wins and runner-up finishes, this time Villopoto getting the win via using his second moto win as the tie-breaker. With only three rounds and six motos reaming, only two points separate to amazing duo.
Slamming home Team Kawasaki/Pro Circuit’s dominance at Millville was Brett Metcalfe, whose 3-3 moto scores gave him third overall, thus making the podium exclusive to the mighty Kawasaki/Pro Circuit team.
The AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF will take a weekend off, then returning to Delmont, Pennsylvania for the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Steel City National on Sunday, August 26, 2007.
