AMA Superbike rd.10-11 - Tooele, UT

Ben Spies Clears Out at Miller Motorsports Superbike National - Yoshimura Suzuki rider Ben Spies won both legs of the Honda Summit of Speed Superbike Doubleheader at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah over the weekend, and in doing so, opened up an 18-point lead on teammate Mat Mladin in the 2007 AMA Superbike National Championship.

Spies, aboard a factory Suzuki GSX-R1000, won the opening leg of the weekend when he nailed the start in Saturday’s opening race, while teammate Mat Mladin got off the line poorly, coming around on the opening lap in seventh lap, some 3.1 seconds adrift of the flying Spies. Spies would maintain a five-second lead throughout the majority of the 21-lap affair before turning the heat up higher at the halfway mark, leading by upwards of nine second at one point. When he did ultimately flash across the finish, he had 7.2-seconds on runner-up Mladin.

Third place was claimed by American Honda's Jake Zemke after fighting off a serious threat from Monster Kawasaki pilot Roger Lee Hayden. Fifth went to Miguel Duhamel, the Canadian getting the better of Monster Kawasaki's Jamie Hacking after a heated battle. Tommy Hayden — also of the Yoshimura Suzuki team — finished seventh.

Sunday’s leg at Miller Motorsports was high drama for a number of reasons, the foremost being Mat Mladin’s huge crash in lap number six. Leading the way when he hit the gravel, the Australian was whisked away to an ambulance, but soon alighted from it to rejoin forces with the beaten and bruised GSX-R1000 his crew had feverishly thrashed on in an effort to bring it back to life. A restart was then called, and while Mladin was forced to start on the back row, he was happy to even be in the race. When the race did start, Ben Spies took off like a bat out of hell, racing away to win by 6.7-seconds over Honda’s Jake Zemke. In a frenzied battle for third place, Miguel Duhamel came out with the final podium spot after executing a masterful pass on Mladin on the white flag lap. One second behind came Roger Lee Hayden in fifth.
