
The final act of the drama that was the 2007 Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix weekend, Ben Spies of the omnipotent Yoshimura Suzuki squadron won the closing act of the USGP, leading from green flag to checkered flag to win the AMA Superbike National at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Sent off a couple of hours after the hype and glamour of the 32-lap MotoGP race had simmered to a slow boil, Spies lined up, got the jump off the start and simply rode off into the Monterey sunset, defeating his teammate Mat Mladin by 4.9-seconds. For Mladin, Laguna was ax exorcise in frustration as he took a bad start, then was forced to pass several riders in his quest to get to the front and seek out Spies. However, once Mladin did find his way into second place, Spies was long gone, nearly four seconds off in the distance. Michael Jordon Motorsports' Aaron Yates, American Honda's Miguel Duhamel and Corona Honda's Neil Hodgson all fought fiercely throughout the course of the entire race, all of them keen to possess the third place position. Finally, when the brawl was over, it was Yates coming out on top, assuming his position on the podium, the first Superbike podium for the former NBA multifold MVP. Duhamel wound up fourth with Hodgson fifth. Monster Kawasaki's Jamie Hacking placed sixth overall, Yamaha's Jason DiSalvo ended up seventh Jake Holden was eight Yamaha's Eric Bostrom and Corona Honda's James Ellison filled out the scoring monitors in ninth and tenth, respectively.
As far as the 2007 AMA Superbike Championship goes, Spies put even more distance between he and his teammate at Laguna Seca earning a point for the pole, a point for most laps led and the additional windfall of points for winning the race. With 12 of 19 races run, Ben Spies now leads the AMA Superbike championship over Mladin with 420 ticks to the Australian’s 396.
