Casey Stoner keeps on rolling, the 2007 MotoGP World Championship leader winning the pole today for Sunday’s Red Bull U.S Grand Prix. The fastest rider in every practice session leading into the final one hour-long qualifying session, Stoner put an exclamation mark on all pre-race activity at Laguna Seca by lapping the 11-turn circuit — including the fabled 300-foor drop known as the Corkscrew — at 1:22.292.
Saturday’s pole run pole was the Australian’s second consecutive pole in two weeks and his third of the year. Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was the second fastest qualifier, just.209 adrift of Stoner. Rizla Suzuki’s Chris Vermeulen’s flying lap will see him complete the front row. Reigning Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix champion Nicky Hayden qualified fourth and will start the race on Sunday from the second row along with Fiat Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi and Marlboro Ducati’s Loris Capirossi.
Americans John Hopkins (California) and Fiat Yamaha’s Colin Edwards (Texas) will begin their race from the third row. Another American, Roger Lee Hayden, was the best wild card in the pack, qualifying 16th on the factory Kawasaki. Fellow Yankee Kurtis Roberts will start from P18.
