Champ Car World Series rd.7 - Toronto, Canada

Will Power wins calamitous CART Grand Prix of Toronto - Several rain showers, seven lead changes, a very tired flagman and a myriad of shattered pieces of carbon fiber later, Will Power won Sunday’s Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto. It was the Team Austraila-backed driver’s second win of the 2007 Champ Car Series.

The Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto got off to atrocious start when a series of shunts on the opening lap left the track looking like Fred Sanford’s junkyard. Oriol Srevia led the field out onto the Toronto circuit to begin the race, but soon thereafter, Alex Tagliani and Simon Pagenaud crashed into one another in the third turn, the nose cone/front wing assembly of Pagenaud ending up tangled in the front of Paul Tracy’s racecar. Tracy then pummeled the wall in turn seven, the shunt also collecting Katherine Legge and Alex Figge. Tristan Gommendy, Jan Heylen and Graham Rahal also suffered damage in the mêlée.

“I couldn’t understand what had happened at first,” explained Tracy to the Canadian press. “I got a really good start and picked up a few positions, then coming into Turn Three I saw two cars touch and I just avoided them. I kept going and then suddenly when I got to Turn Seven it just felt like my front wing fell off. The car didn’t turn at all and went straight into the wall.”

On the restart, Servia motored away Bourdais on the restart, but the multifold CART champion kept the power down and chiseled away at the gap. Servia, Bourdais and Power all pitted in 34, 25 and 36, respectively. Servia and Tagliani would soon crash each other, leading to yet another full course yellow. After the ensuing restart and a number of other competition conflicts, Will Power finally found his way into the lead after acing Ryan Dalziel in turn three. Despite further altercations and incidents, Power kept the rubber side down, racing away from the pretenders, further building his lead. Power would remain in full speed ahead to win the race, but not without other act of high drama behind him. In the twilight stage of the race, last week’s winner at Mont-Tremblant, Robert Doornbos, botched braking his car into turn three, and upon doing so, clashed into Bourdais, instantly ending the Frenchman’s race.

“I didn’t see what happened because it was all behind me,” said a dejected Bourdais. “But I think he locked up his wheels and then he hit me. This doesn’t help me in the championship.”

On a much brighter note, the man of the day in Ontario was Will Power.

"It was an interesting race,” he said of his victory. “It was great that it rained, but also in the dry we went a lap longer than everyone. We were looking good then. We were looking good either way. So, you know, I'm very happy for the team. This is exactly what we needed points-wise, and also for Sebastien not to finish, that really helps us in the championship. We've got some pretty strong tracks coming up."
