Reed and Villopoto Shoot Up Dallas

It was a thriller, but in the end, Chad Reed crossed the finish line ahead of Yamaha teammate Josh Hill by 1.872 seconds to win for the eighth time the 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. Immediately behind Hill — and only 1.798-seconds adrift — was third place finisher Team Honda’s Davi Millsaps. Kevin Windham, 0.902 seconds off Millsaps red rear fender, was fourth. The top four riders were all within 4.572 seconds of one another at the finish, dazzling the 46,656 fans present in Dallas’s Texas Stadium with their hard riding.

“I feel like I've given a lot of wins away this year so I just wanted to go out there and put in a good ride," said Reed of the 34th AMA stadium victory of his excellent career. "I tried to get to the front as quick as possible and let those guys fight it out. This was a track that you had to stay on your toes and watch to not make mistakes.”

After Team Monster Energy/Kawasaki rider Travis Preston Reed aced the Progressive Direct Holeshot, by lap two, Reed, of the San Manuel Yamaha team, had displaced the Kawasaki rider and took control of the lead. Yamaha’s Josh Hill ran second, but could never quite get a hook into Reed, thus having to settle for second. Millsaps was third, and Windham a disappointing fourth, now leaving the Team Torco Racing Fuels/No Fear/Honda rider 27 points behind Reed in the 2008 Monster AMA Monster Energy Supercross standing. Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry, now back for good from a leg injury, was fifth and Honda’s Andrew Short was sixth.

The 15-lap AMA Supercross Lites East Region main event was another crowd pleaser, albeit for different reasons. Monster Energy Kawasaki Ryan Villopoto started the main event behind a holeshooting Josh Grant of the Torco Racing Fuels outfit. Villopoto let Grant lead for two laps before moving him back to second. All the drama, though, was taking place back in 21st position. Lites point’s leader Trey Canard had been knocked down at the start of the race and things look dismal for the 17 year-old. But got Canard got back on his Torco Racing Fuels/No Fear/Honda and took off, passing riders by the droves. By lap number seven, he was up to sixth place, and on lap number 14 — the white flag lap — moved into fourth after setting his fastest lap of the race at 53.926 (only Villopoto had dropped down in to the 53 second range all night long). It was a spectacular effort, and with two rounds remaining in the 2008 AMA Lites East Region Series, Canard still leads the way with 111 points. Villopoto is a fast closing second with 94 points.

"Josh and I had a good race going there for a while and I think he stalled his bike in the corner there and I got around him," said Villopoto. "Canard had a whole race lead on me (in the points coming into this race). I was hoping for that mistake. He didn't have a very good race tonight and that's what I need. I need some help to get back in this points race. I have try and win, get good starts and try and make that points gap smaller heading into Detroit."
