On a gnarly, whooped-out supercross/motocross style track etched out of the grassy infield between the pit lane and 18-degree tri-oval of the Daytona International Speedway, Monster Energy/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto bounced back from last Saturday night’s abysmal 19th place finish in Atlanta's Georgia Dome to win the prestigious Daytona Supercross.
After a red flag was thrown in the opening laps due to a downed Grant Langston, Villopoto - as he had done the first time - took the lead on the restart and just plain checked out. Meanwhile, Monster Energy Supercross Championship series leader Ryan Dungey battled fiercely with San Manuel Yamaha’s Josh Hill. Dungey would ultimately zap Hill for second. The large crowd on hand then began to cheer Dungey on as they wanted to see a showdown on the brutal track between the two brilliant young riders. For a spell, it looked as if Dungey was gaining ground on the No. 2 KX450, but it wasn’t to be as Villopoto was simply untouchable. When the checkered flag was unfurled and waved, Villopoto was the undisputed winner while Dungey placed second.
Further back behind the fleeing Villopoto and Dungey was Trey Canard and his Honda, the 450 class “part timer” finding himself up on the podium for the second-straight week. Canard worked had motored by Hill a few laps into the main event and was never challenged. Veteran Kevin Windham got a bad start but eventually wore down Davi Millsaps to put his GEICO Powersports Honda in fourth. Millsaps was fifth, Tommy Hahn sixth, Nick Wey seventh, and Kyle Chisholm eighth. Hill, who is still hurting from injuries, wound up in ninth, ahead of Ryan Morias, who made his 450 debut for Suzuki with tenth.
Daytona marked the third round of the AMA East Region 250 Championship, and for the third consecutive Saturday evening, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Christophe Pourcel won the main event. However, it was not easy for the Frenchman as he had to beat back strong challenge from Austin Stroupe and Justin Barcia. When the gate dropped to start the main event, it was Stroupe acing the holeshot on his Suzuki. Stroupe rode strongly up front, and tried to get away form his pursuers, but it would not be long before Pourcel found himself in the lead. Meanwhile, rookies Blake Baggett and Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson were right there with the leaders. Pourcel began to pull away, but the rookies banded together and went after Stroupe. At the finish, Stroupe held on for his third-straight second place finish, with Wilson edging Baggett for his first career podium. On the last lap, Barcia went after fifth place Ryan Sipes and got the spot, relegating Moto Concept’s Yamaha-backed Sipes to sixth, ahead of Metcalfe. Darryn Durham, Kyle Cunningham and Martin Davalos rounded out the top ten.
