Formula One rd.11 - Budapest, Hungary

Lewis the Great Rules the Hungaroring - Despite seemingly Machiavellian inner-team politics, which saw him at odds with his teammate Fernando Alonso, and Team McLaren overlord Ron Dennis, Formula 1 rookie Lewis Hamilton shook it all off and won his fourth Grand Prix of the season, victory coming at the Hungaroring. And not only did the victory only further fortify Hamilton’s reputation as one of the brightest and most poised F1 rookies in the entire history of the sport, it also provided him a seven point lead in the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship. Hamilton’s win was all the more impressive, displaying his composure and strength of mind in fighting off the bad luck that plagued him at the recent Nurburgring round.

Starting from the front row alongside Nick Heidfeld of the BMW team, Hamilton got the bets jump out of the hole, leading the filed through turn one. Just behind was a fast-starting Kimi Raikkonen, his Ferrari just in front of the German’s BMW. Roaring behind were Nico Rosberg and Toyota pilot Ralf Schumacher. Meanwhile, a bit further down the scoring monitors, Fernando Alonso - who had been docked five grid positions due to his shenanigans in qualifying - was flying, streaking past Mark Webber on lap number two and Robert Kubica’s BMW on lap number three. Things remained static - Raikkonen straining to keep Hamilton in sight - until lap 17 when Alonso pitted. Two laps later, the two frontrunners motored down pit lane, Hamilton getting out first, holding onto P1. Raikkonen hit the pits on lap number 46, while Hamilton ducked in on lap 50. Things began to tighten up a few laps on as the Finn closed in on the Englishman, just one second adrift. But it was to no avail, Raikkonen unable to find that little extra to get a hook in the rear wing of Hamilton’s Silver Arrow. At the checkers, it was Hamilton, Raikkonen and a happy Nick Heidfeld. Fernando Alonso placed fourth, while Kubica was fifth, Schumacher, in a great run, was sixth ahead of Rosberg and Renault’s Heikki Kovalainen.

Even though we’re already into August, Formula1 will now take it’s so-called “Summer Break”, back at it on Sunday, August 26 at the Turkish Grand Prix. Until then, Lewis the Great enjoys an eight-point lead over his “teammate” Alonso (80 to 73). Kimi Raikkonen, idles in third with 60 points, his shot at the title beginning to melt away.
