F1 Melbourne Review - The first race of the F1 season started with a first corner scrap that saw Lewis Hamilton capitalise on events, making a sly move offline, outbraking his rivals and gaining places. Just one move, but one that stamped his entrance to F1, he means business.
Kimi Raikkonen gave Ferrari a smooth transition to the post-Michael Schumacher era when he scored an incisive victory in the Australian grand prix, marking out the 27-year-old Finn as clear favourite for the 2007 world championship.
Starting from pole position, Raikkonen edged cleanly into the lead in the opening sprint of the new season, his Ferrari F2007 displaying a performance edge over the pursuing McLaren-Mercedes MP4-22s which Alonso.
Jenson Button was marking the seventh anniversary of his own Formula 1 debut with a disappointing display. So poor was the handling balance on his Honda RA107 that the 27-year-old will struggle to add to the single victory he has achieved, in Hungary last season.
Jenson's difficult day was made worse when he incurred a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane as he approached his first pit stop. He eventually took the chequered flag in 15th, four places behind his team-mate Rubens Barrichello.
Panasonic Toyota Racing also got off to a tough start, scoring just 1 point from the first race, thanks to Ralf Schumacher's eighth place. Jarno and Ralf lined up a promising eighth and ninth on the grid and the pair ran almost side-by-side for the race and Jarno followed Ralf home in ninth place, just out of the points.
