The ninth round of the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship, the Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander Von Deutschland, is rapidly approaching, set to run at the historic Nurburgring on Sunday, July 12, 2009. One driver who would love nothing more than to win his first Grand Prix in what will be his 33rd career start will be Toyota’s Timo Glock. Certainly cognizant of the harsh reality that the Japanese motor giant has lost some ground to the celebrated Brawn GP and Red Bull Racing F1 teams thus far in 2009, Glock, who sits eight in driver points with 13 ticks, believes he and his TF109 are not beyond winning a race this season. While Toyota teammate Jarno Trulli rests fifth in points with 21.5 thus far in ’09, Trulli is confident having led the opening phase of the Bahrain Grand Prix earlier this spring. Still a bit out in the wild when compared to the aforementioned Brawn and Red Bull operations, Glock believes Toyota has its house in order and can make a run at the top step of the podium with nine races left before the curtain drops on the ’09 world tour.
"I was always careful about talking about the first win," Glock explained to Autosport.com when the subject of the team’s first win was broached. "I always said we had to concentrate on developing the car race by race and that's still my opinion. Sure, at the moment we maybe have slightly lost pace to the top two teams, but there is a chance every race to be up there."
What had bolstered the young German’s confidence is that the TF109, in his opinion, is a much higher performing piece of machinery than what came before.
"We have made a good step from 2008 to 2009," said Glock. "Okay, we have different tires and a different aerodynamic configuration, but I would say that the car is better in every area. "It has better stability. You can drive the car more aggressively and not have to pick a window where it is working. Last year, when you lost the car, you lost it quite unpredictably. We improved that already last year and we have made more improvements this year."
Next stop: Germany!
