Tony Kanaan Fries Kentucky

On lap number 190, Tony Kanaan and his #11 Team 7-Eleven car dove beneath the #22 Vision Racing’s A.J. Foyt and raced away to win the Meijer Indy 300 presented by Coca-Cola and Edy's by 1.7457 seconds over Scott Dixon. Foyt held on for a career-best finish of third overall. For Kanaan, it was his fourth victory of the 2007 IndyCar season, while Dixon — who has been deep in the throes of a fierce dogfight with Dario Franchitti for the 2007 IndyCar Championship — motored up to within just eight points of title chase leader Franchitti. Fourth overall went to Marco Andretti, while Tomas Scheckter finished fifth in the No. 2 Vision Racing car. For Franchitti, Saturday night in Kentucky was one he’d much rather forget. With 56,000 fans witnessing it all, right after the checkered flag, Franchitti and his Canadian Club-backed machine smashed into the rear end, and as he did just six days ago at Michigan International Speedway, Franchitti flipped his car.

"That one was completely my fault — there's no excuse," Franchitti lamented after the race in which he placed eighth. "I screwed up twice in the race. I screwed up once coming out of the pits and then after the checkered. I didn't realize it was the checkered. I got the 'Hey, it's a checkered' just as I was hitting him. I'm pretty disgusted right now for that -- for both my mistakes today."

Franchitti is now only eight points ahead of Dixon, who is closing fast in the twilight stage of the 2007 season. Kanaan, now only 52 points behind, has a fighting chance at the title, as well.

"The car was really good; I've got to thank all the 7-Eleven crew," said Kanaan. "It was a nice picture in my mirror when I saw (Dixon and Franchitti) getting smaller and smaller.

"We've got to take it one at a time,” he went on. “I'm not thinking about the championship right now. We've got to think about winning and try to get closer."

Dixon, who will get his next shot at Franchitti and his lead at the classic Infineon Raceway roadcourse circuit in Sonoma, California on Sunday, August 26, was thrilled with the end result at Kentucky.

"My guys did a fantastic job in the pits and enabled us to jump in front of the two AGR cars," enthused Dixon. "TK on the restarts, along with Dario, just blew around the outside of me. Both those guys were so fast. It was frustrating. We were able to split them up and keep Dario behind me, which was the main thing.

"And then we had that pit stop there where Danica had her problem and Dario ran off into the grass and maybe wrecked his wing a little bit. It was finally their night to lose. We made good gains in the points today."

Scott Sharp placed sixth at Kentucky Speedway and was followed across the finish line by Ed Carpenter of the Vision Racing team. Helio Castroneves was ninth and Vitor Meira rounded out the top 10.
