
In his Upper Midwestern home state of Minnesota – nicknamed the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” – Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey beat back the oppressive and sweltering heat and humidity at round seven of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross 450 Championships at Spring Creek Raceway in Millville, Minnesota to race away to a 1-1 double moto sweep to pull down his sixth win in a row in the series.
By the thousands they hung off the fences, the Minnesota fans cheering their boy Dungey on as he zapped Honda's Kevin Windham to take the lead in the opening moto and then motoring away to a 21-second victory at the checkered flag. In the second moto, Dungey was fifth out of the gate and around the first turn, but then caught Honda's Andrew Short on lap three and took of the race to win by nearly 40 seconds! The overall opened up Dungey's lead in the championship standings to an 89 points over Short, who used a 3-2 afternoon to earn the second step of the podium. Short was a solid second for most of the final moto, but finally gave way to Honda privateer Kyle Regal, who ended the day with third overall, via 8-2 finishes. Kevin Windham, inheriting the ride vacated by an injured Davi Millsaps, rode his works Honda to Windham fourth overall.
Troy Lee Designs/Honda rider Ben Townley gated well in Minnesota. However, bad luck and ill-timed mistakes and shunts in both motos saw him place fifth overall. JGR/Muscle Milk/Toyota Yamaha's Josh Grant was an inspired second in the first moto, but was heat with heat exhaustion from the oppressive conditions and ended up on a stretcher in the Asterisk Mobile Medical Unit. 2-10 moto finishes slotted him in at sixth overall.
Chad Reed ran sixth at the beginning of the opening moto, but as alleged neck injury saw him pull off the track and place a lowly 28th. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider never went to the gate for the second moto.
GEICO Powersports Honda's Trey Canard backed up his win at RedBud with another at Spring Creek, getting the job done with a 2-1 moto finishes. It was Trey’s second consecutive national victory. Canard fought hard with opening moto winner, Christophe Pourcel – passing the former World Champion on lap 12 - but when Pourcel raced back into the lead. Pourcel's Monster Energy Kawasaki teammates, Jake Weimer and Tyla Rattray were third and fourth in the moto. Yamaha rider Broc Tickle placed fifth.
The skies, grey and saturated with moisture, blew up when the second moto took off from behind the dropped starting gate, Canard utilizing his mud riding skills to take a decisive win over Monster Energy Kawasaki's Dean Wilson and GEICO Powersports Honda's Justin Barcia. Meanwhile, Pourcel struggled in the mud and finished 10th. Wilson ended the day with the runner-up slot, his 6-2 moto finishes beating out Rattray's 4-4 for the honor. Rattray rounded out the podium, while Weimer (3-5) and Pourcel finished fourth and fifth, respectively
