David Philippaerts wins MX1 Grand Prix of Germany - Italian KTM factory rider David Philippaerts used a spectacular second moto win to claim the overall victory today at the soggy Teutschentahl race circuit in Germany. Although World Championship point leader Josh Coppins won the opening moto over a hard-charging Marc De Reuver, Steve Ramon and Ken de Dijcker, Philippaerts held station in fifth, getting his German Grand Prix off to a steady, if not spectacular start. However it was moto number two in the mighty MX1 classification that left all present along the fences in Germany buzzing. Heralded as an “instant classic”, the moto was, by all accounts, the race of the year thus far in 2007. Josh Coppins lead the closing moto in the early stages, a small miscue sent him straight to the dull end of the field, thus allowing Marc De Reuver into the lead. Riding aggressively and confidently, the Dutchman appeared to have the moto — and Grand Prix — in the palm of his glove. Then, it all went south when he made a major mistake. At this point, David Philippaerts found himself in the lead. And when Sebastien Pourcel passed Steve Ramon late in the moto, The Grand Prix of Germany was granted to David Philippaerts.
“Mantova was not good, also Valkenswaard was not good,” commented the Italian after the race. “I am making progress, today is very good the first heat, but I got tired. Then, in the second, I felt strong. I see could Coppins and De Reuver crash and I pushed for the win in the last three laps and I just kept going. I didn't know that Pourcel, who is a good rider and who today was very fast, passed Steve Ramon and allowed me to win the Grand Prix. I don't look at the championship, I look at the races and that worked for me today. I am very happy to win.”
