Piquet Scores Strong Second in Monaco Kart Cup

After six hours and 405 laps, the Piquet Sports trio of Nelson Piquet, Sergio Jimenez and Carlos Iaconelli came through to finish the Monaco Kart Cup Endurance race in second position, despite incurring a penalty in the final heat, which was given in error.

After starting seventh in yesterdays first two-hour heat, the team was soon leading the pack thanks to a savvy strategy and quick footwork, and at the end of the first 138 laps, Piquet Sports led by two laps.

The weekend was not to go without thrills and spills though, and the drama began to unfold in the second heat. After leading from the start through stints by Jimenez and Piquet, Iaconelli then took over the driving duties for a long middle stint. Towards the end of the two hours the team ran out of fuel on track while leading by six laps, just 100m from the refuelling area. The boys worked hard to get the kart into the refuelling area and managed to fight back to retain the overall lead overnight.

However, having been judged to have pushed the kart too far during the fuelling mishap, Piquet Sports was handed a two minute penalty at the start of todays final two-hour heat.

Emerging at the back of the pack the trio fought and, against the odds, came through to maintain the overall lead. The show was not over yet though, with the team confused at being given another penalty half way through. They tried to take the penalty, coming in for around half a minute, but were sent back onto track but then were told they had to come back in, which they duly did for a further two minutes. It turned out that the penalty was meant for another car and Piquet Sports were given two laps back, but it was not enough to make up for the loss of time in the mistaken penalty stop and go period.

Nelson Piquet commented: "That was tough but really good fun. To do this on my doorstep in a team with my friends has been great. We were going really really well but, as is always the case in this kind of race, there are always some problems and so we ended up finishing second. Its a shame because without the confusion of the stop and go that wasnt meant for us we should have won, but that is the way things go and the most important thing is that weve had a lot of fun here. But were coming back next time to take the win".
