MotoGP Round 17 - Sepang Preview

With two of the three MotoGP World Championships settled the field heads off to Malaysia for the first of the two final rounds. Only the 250cc Championship is still up for grabs with Valentino Rossi and Mike Di Meglio taking the MotoGP and 125cc World Championships respectively.

Marco Simonchelli and Alvaro Bautista will continue to battle it out for the title at Sepang, with the current gap sitting at thirty-nine points. A solid finish on Sunday would see Marco crowned champion.

In the main class, Casey Stoner will be looking to continue his good run of recent form after victory in Australia with another win this weekend at the fast and flowing Sepang circuit.

Sepang is a regular haven for MotoGP teams in the off season for testing, so a lot of the riders already have many miles under their belts at the circuit meaning that it could provide the viewers with one of the most fascinating battles of the year.

After failing to make a lap at the start of the Australian Grand Prix recently, Dani Pedrosa will be hoping that he can bounce back and challenge Casey Stoner for the honor of finishing second in the points standings for the second year running.

Nicky Hayden will be looking to continue his rich run of form, which has seen him acquire two podiums out of the last three rounds, to finish off the season in a flourish as he bids adieu to Honda. For 2009 he sets his sights firmly on mastering the characteristics of the Ducati Desmosedici, a bike which Nicky hopes will thrust him back into the limelight and with backing from Ducati team manager Livio Suppo and 2007 MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner, Nicky has every reason to feel optimistic about the future.

Toni Elias is another rider who will be making his penultimate appearance for his current team. Toni will be moving back to the Gresini Honda squad in 2009, on a HRC Factory Spec Honda RC212V, after a twelve months hiatus with the Alice Ducati squad which has seen Toni truly experience the highs and lows of the MotoGP paddock. Toni will be looking to put on another one of his dazzling displays in his final two outings for the team.

John Hopkins on the other hand has had a season to forget, as he has struggled to get the Kawasaki up to the pace that he was hoping for. He will be aiming to use the remaining two races as an extended test session before the end of the season and hope that things improve for team green in 2009 with the arrival of Marco Melandri.

The MotoGP race gets underway at 8am (CET) on Sunday
