The Nascar Sprint Cup points leader heads into the final round with the opportunity to become only the second driver in the history of the sport to take three back to back titles.
Not since Cale Yarborough managed the magnificent feat some thirty years earlier has anyone been able to match it. Many have tried and failed, to date 13 double champions have stumbled in the third season including Richard Petty, Buck Baker, Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt, but on Sunday Jimmie will be hoping to avoid any trouble and equal a piece of Nascar history.
After a tough start to his title defense, Jimmie has been on fire since the Chase for the Sprint Cup began and takes the largest point’s advantage he has ever enjoyed into the final round of the Championship.
With a 141 point lead over Carl Edwards, who is the only driver who can deny him the title, Jimmie needs to finish in the top 36 on Sunday to be assured of his third consecutive Sprint Cup title. If he does that Carl Edwards cannot prevent the record going in Jimmie’s favor, even if he wins.
"First, you have to do it. That's why I haven't talked about it," Johnson said. "Two, I don't think I have -- or any driver has -- the right to proclaim their spot in history. That's not for that person to decide. That's for the fan base, for the guys who have been in that club or are accepted in that club. So I don't comment on it because I'm 33 and still racing, and I don't feel like it's my spot to comment on those things. I also feel I have a lot of good years left in the car to really make my mark in the sport."
"If we are fortunate enough to win the championship, I'm sure thoughts and things will come to mind where I will have some comments about what it means to me. But I don't think it's my place to say where I fit in."
Kyle Busch also has the opportunity to create a piece of Nascar history this weekend in the Nationwide race set to take place on Saturday. After tying with Sam Ard for the number of wins in a season, Kyle will be looking to re-write the record books with his eleventh win of the Nationwide campaign.
The final Sprint Cup race will take place on Sunday at 3pm (Local time)
