Shane “Shakey” Byrne bounced back to claim two third place finishes in the latest round of the British Superbike championship at Cadwell Park.
Shakey, who has been almost untouchable all year, suffered his first non podium finish at the previous round of the championship at Knockhill, after a high speed crash into the first turn whilst leading the re-started race.
However, Shakey had no time to mull over his previous accident as he headed to one of the trickiest tracks on the current BSB calendar, Cadwell Park and its notorious mountain section.
After competing in the new Formula one style knockout qualifying session for the first time, Shakey found himself in third overall for the two races and had good reason to feel renewed confidence that he could make the jump back to the top step.
However it was the in-form Tom Sykes on the Rizla Suzuki and Leon Haslam on the HM Plant Honda who got the jump in race one and made a break, battling it out for the win, whilst Shane brought the Airwaves Ducati home in a comfortable third place.
Byrne was determined not to let the two riders steal an advantage in race two and managed to maintain a safe gap to the leading duo of Sykes and Haslam over the first half of the race.
As the race wore on Shakey managed to close in and was looking like he could trouble the two leaders, however due to an accident on the track, the race was red flagged and the result declared with 3 laps remaining, Shakey just 0.9 of a second behind the leader Leon Haslam.
Shakey said: "I would like to have had a few more laps as we had closed on Leon and Tom and I would have been able to try and pass. I knew it was going to be difficult at the start of the race but it was all coming together towards the end of the race. I rode as hard as I could but just needed those few more laps. We are still leading the championship and that's all that matters."
Despite his two third positions Byrne has maintained a healthy lead in the championship, leading his closet rival Tom Sykes by 110 points with only six races of the championship remaining.
