On Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2009, High Point Raceway in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, hosted the fourth round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship 250 class, as well as the first jewel of the three-round 2009 Monster Energy Triple Crown of Motocross.
At the start of the opening 250cc moto on 1.32-mile ultra-technical, classic outdoor circuit, as he had done in the first three rounds of the ’09 series — Glen Helen, Hangtown and Freestone — 2009 AMA East Region Supercross Champion and French refugee Christophe Pourcel of the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki outfit won the opening 30-minute plus two-lap moto. Second to Pourcel in the race was earned by GEICO Powersports Honda’s Trey Canard. Third went to Ryan Dungey, who suffered an early race fall when he tagged a crashing Jake Weimer. Dropped to 13th, Dungey raced back hard to earn the podium spot.
It was a holeshooting Canard scoring the holeshot in the second and final moto, the red haired kid from Oklahoma leading the world’s best 250F riders up and down the green hills and valleys of High Point. For 13 laps, Canard held back the advances of second place rider Pourcel, Christian unable to make a move stick. Then it all went sideways — litteraly — for Canard. With only a lap and a half remaning in the moto, Canard got out of shape and ended up being throw over the handlebars: Ed result: A 32nd place finish — and, far worse, a broken wrist. Canard rolling around in the dirt, Pourcel flashed by and kept everything glued together to sweep both motos and win the overall in the first round of the of the Monster Energy Triple Crown of Motocross. Ryan Dungey crossed the finish in second, his 3-2 scores good enough for the runner-up step on the podium. Muscle Milk KTM’s Tommy Searle was third in the second moto, which when combined with his opening moto fourth, shoved him up into third overall on the day. Pourcel’s Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammate Tyla Rattray was fourth overall with a 5-4 and Honda’s Blake Wharton was fifth, posting up 6-6 heat finishes.
