On what was once a World War II wartime airfield, the 61st running of the British Grand Prix took place on the refurbished and majestic Silverstone Circuit.
Site of the very first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1950, Red Bull Racing’s contentious teammates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber lined up next to one another on the front row of the grid at Silverstone, with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and home nation hero Lewis Hamilton just behind them on the second row. Mercedes GP Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica completed row three.
With the out of the five lights to start the race, Webber overtook the German on the first lap when Vettel skidded off the track. From that point forward, Webber took complete control, and simply dominated the race his third win of the season. Webber held station at the front for virtually the entire 52-lap race over the 5.891-kilometer circuit. It was the fifth win in 148 total Formula 1 starts.
Vettel, now starting last in the 24-car field with a flat right-rear tire, raced for all he was worth to get back to finish seventh at the end. Native Brit Lewis Hamilton came home second, 1.3 seconds behind Webber, followed by Mercedes' Nico Rosberg.
"I had a good start today and was happy to be up to fourth place by the end of the first lap,” said Rosberg. “Robert was holding me up and with Fernando pushing hard behind, it wasn't easy to maintain the place. Our strategy was really strong today so thanks to the guys on the pit wall for their efforts and keeping me out on the options. I had a great lap and with the quick pit stop, it was enough to get me out ahead of Robert, and that made the podium possible. It's been a good effort from the team to turn our situation around after Valencia. We have made a step forward and analyzed where we went wrong and to come away with a podium today is fantastic. It's a real turnaround and I am confident that there is more to come from us."
Reigning World Champion Jenson Button finished fourth after horrible qualifying effort while Rubens Barrichello rounded out the top five. Positions six through 10 belonged to Kamui Kobayashi, Vettel, Adrian Sutil, Michael Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg.
Also forced to deal with a flat tire on the first lap was Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who collided with teammate Fernando Alonso. Massa finished 15th, one spot behind Alonso who was later hit with a drive-through penalty for cutting a corner as he passed Renault's Robert Kubica.
In the chase for the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship, McLarens’s Lewis Hamilton holds the point leader, extending his advantage to 12 ticks over teammate Button. Webber and Vettel swapped positions in the standings, with Webber (-17) moving up to third and Vettel (-24) falling to fourth.
