Kawasaki riders James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto both used a double-moto sweep to win their respective classes at the penultimate round of the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship at the Moto-X 338 facility in Southwick, Massachusetts.
In the 450F-based Motocross classification, Stewart, as he has done 22 other times this year, simply rode away from everyone to win his eleventh consecutive National of the season. In the opening 30-minute-plus-two-lap moto, Stewart cleared out to defeat Red Bull Honda rider Andrew Short by exactly 56.036 seconds. Vacationing Grand Prix rider Marc de Reuver — on a “borrowed” Red Bull Honda CRF450R — came from a 10th place start to blast his way through the deep and nasty Southwick sand to place an impressive third. Hailing from Holland and highly rated as a world-class sand specialist, de Reuver impressed the American fans with his style and skill. Stewart’s Kawasaki teammate, Tim Ferry, was fourth across the finish line in the moto. Stewart came back to win the second moto by 23.326 seconds over privateer upstart Cody Cooper. Using an opening moto seventh, Cooper found himself the runner-up finisher at Southwick. Ferry’s 4-4 afternoon was good for third overall.
“It definitely wasn’t smooth,” said Stewart of the rough Southwick track. “I’ve won a moto here before, but that was it. I’ve gotten this far, so I want to win next weekend. But as far as a perfect season goes, it hasn’t really hit me yet.”
After placing second to Team Suzuki pilot Ryan Dungey at the last two consecutive AMA Motocross Lites Nationals (Washougal and Millville), Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto got back to his winning ways at Southwick. In the first moto, Villopoto took the measure of teammate Brett Metcalfe. Ryan Dungey was third. In the second moto, Villopoto smoked Dungey, who then placed one sport ahead of Metcalfe, using the spot as a tiebreaker over third place finisher Metcalfe to place second.
“The track was rough,” said Villopoto. “Being sand, you could just about anywhere you want, but obviously there is going to be one fast line. The last two races I’ve made mistakes here and there. Coming in here, I wanted to win the overall because I’ve never done that.”
