Tommy Searle and David Philippaerts win in Bulgaria

Monster Yamaha’s David Philippaerts clinched the MX1 classification while Red Bull KTM’s Tommy Searle did the same to rule the Grand Prix of Bulgaria on Sunday, May 11, 2008. English youngster Searle used 2-1 moto scores to claim the top step of the podium as MX2 World Championship rivals Antonio Cairoli and Tyla Rattray limped through the afternoon with mixed results.

“I am very happy because this is my first victory of the season and my second career GP win,” smiled Searle after the mottos had been run. “I really enjoyed the battle with Shaun (Note: Shaun Simpson was second I the second moto). I knew that Tyla and Cairoli were quite far back but I did not want to take any risks. The track was quite tricky as I wanted to be sure to try to pass Shaun at just the right time and I did.” The upper tier of the MX2 World Championship had totally collapsed in on itself as a full-on brawl for the title has ensued between Tyla Rattray (157 points), Antonio Cairoli (153 points) and a fast closing Searle (149 points). The trio will all cross swords next weekend at the Grand Prix of Italy in Mantova. Monster Yamaha rider David Philippaerts held sway in the premier MX1 division, his 1-2 outing in Bulgaria forcing the event organizers to usher him to the top step of the podium. KTM factory rider Jonathan Barragan was the runner-up finisher in Bulgaria with solid 2-4 moto finishes. Sebastien Pourcel placed a lowly eight in the opening mode, but came roaring back to win the second moto and placed third overall. As a subplot, Monster Yamaha World Championship hopeful Josh Coppins nailed down 4-7 moto scores on Sunday. And while not a bad result for the still injured New Zealander, the time is rapidly approaching for him to pick up his game if he wants to win the World Championship. As far as the 2008 MX1 World Championship is concerned, David Philippaerts leads the way with 149 points. Steve Ramon is second with 132 marks. Josh Coppins sits third with 115. Billy Mackenzie (100 points), Ken De Dycker (98 points), Jonathan Barragan (94 points) and Seb Pourcel (90 points) are still very much in the mix, but must overcome inconsistency and bad motos if they wish to make a serious run at the FIM Gold Medal.
