So now it is down to two points. On Saturday afternoon, September 1, 2007 at Road Atlanta in hot and muggy Georgia, Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin yet again showed teammate Ben Spies the way to the finish line, the win now putting Mladin only two points away from Spies in the fiercely fought 2007 AMA Superbike National Championship. With only two races remaining, Spies leads the Australian 583 points to 581.
Mladin was in control of the race from the onset, leading Spies, but then Spies crashed on lap number six, bringing out the red flag. While both Spies and his bike were in operating condition, they were forced to re-start from the last row. When the race did go back to green, Team Yamaha’s Eric Bostrom grabbed the holeshot over Mladin, holding down the lead up to turn number six. Then, Mladin executing a slick pass, was by, and promptly and took off and disappeared.
Meanwhile, Spies was riding for all he was worth, slicing and dicing his way through the pack. Spies was up to eighth by the completion of the opening lap and was up to second place by lap six. However, there was no catching Mladin who raced away to win by 6.591 seconds.
"I said to Ben (Spies), we’re not good for each other’s health," Mladin said afterwards, his 62nd career AMA Superbike win now in the record book. "We’ve got a couple more races to go. Hopefully we can keep it together."
Understandably, Spies was forlorn on the podium. "It was tough," he said. "Not so much in pain after the red flag, just trying to wrestle the thing." He added, "I gave it everything we could and got through the pack and realized I wasn’t going to catch Mat.”
Third on the day and finishing off the podium was Monster Kawasaki’s Jamie Hacking. Fourth went to Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates. American Honda’s Jake Zemke finished fifth overall, fending off the determined advances of Roger Lee Hayden. Fast by Ferracci’s Matt Lynn was seventh and his teammate, Luca Scassa, was eighth.
