Massa’a Valencia Victory Hangs in the Balance

While Scuderia Ferrari’s Felipe Massa raced to a brilliant victory over McLaren’s World Championship leader Lewis Hamilton in the premiere European Grand Prix at Valencia, controversy has certainly clouded the winning result. Apparently, race officials are deep in the throes of a post-race investigation involving a pit late altercation involving Massa and Force India's Adrian Sutil. Second and third on the podium in Spain were the aforementioned Hamilton and BMW’s Robert Kubica. Pole sitter Massa got the jump on the field to begin the European Grand Prix, with Hamilton just behind and fighting back Kubica. From that point forward, the leading trio raced away, Massa pitting early, but still able to make it back out onto the Valencia circuit wit the lead. By the halfway mark of the 57-lap race, Massa — consistently 0.7 seconds a lap quicker than Hamilton — had gathered up a 10 second lead. What was to be Massa’s post race drama came during his final pit stop when he left his pit box and drove right into the path of Fore India’s Sutil. Almost miraculously on the very narrow pit road, the two narrowly missed one another. Almost immediately, the pit stewards announced there would certainly be an investigation forthcoming. Whatever… Massa kept the pedal to the metal, easily winning the race over Hamilton. Kubica, third across the finish line, was 40 seconds back. Heikki Kovalainen finished fourth, while Toyota’s Jarno Trulli had an excellent race to place fifth. Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel finished sixth, one spot better than Toyota’s Timo Glock. Williams-BMW man Nico Rosberg earned the final GP point position, placing eighth. With 12 races now run in the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship, Lewis Hamilton leads Massa 70 points to 64. Third place driver Kimi Raikkonen — whose engine went up like a meteor on the front straight — stands mired in third with 57 points.
